Abstract Editor's Note
The September Issues of the International Journal of High-Rise Buildings are devoted to the papers presented in the annual China-Japan-Korea Tall Building Forums. This year's CJK Tall Building Form issue of the journal is especially meaningful. Due to the pandemic, the CJK Tall Building Forums were held mostly online for the past three years. However, this year's forum was finally held fully in person again very successfully.
After joining the forum in Tokyo in July, I present this year's CJK Tall Building Forum special issue of the
journal with great pleasure. Please join me in celebrating resuming this seminal event in person.
This special issue covers a broad range of topics concerning tall building design and construction discussed during this year's CJK Tall Building Forum. This issue begins with a tall building history paper by Akihiko Osawa titled "the Birth and Development of High-Rise Buildings in Japan." Multiple papers are devoted to structural design of tall buildings as structural design is more important in tall buildings than in any other building types due to their tallness. Wenjie Liao et al. present "Generative Artificial Intelligence for Structural Design of Tall Buildings." Xiao Congzhen et al. discuss "Development and Practice of Performance-Based Seismic Design of High-Rise Buildings in China." Mizuki Shigematsu et al. investigate "Structural Design of a Building with High Damping Provided by Deformation Amplification Mechanisms and Tuned Viscous Mass Damper." Two papers present studies on fire safety and design. Myung Sik Lee and Pill Sun Seo present "A Study on the Implement of AI-based Integrated Smart Fire Safety System in Public Facility." Min Jae Park discusses "The First Performance-based Structural Fire Design for Office Building in Korea." Construction challenges of tall buildings are presented by Ayako Yasutomi and Shinsuke Inoue with their paper titled "DX Challenges in Azabudai HILLS." The special issue closes with two case study papers – one focused on seismic design and the other on holistic design approach. Peng Liu et al. present "Case Study on the Seismic Design Strategy for Post-Quake Functional Buildings in China." DoYong Um presents "Conversion Vertical Platform: Changdong•Sanggye Start-Up and Culture Industry Complex."
The CJK Tall Building Forum, held in Japan this year, will be held in China next year and in Korea in the
following year. I am fully confident that the forum will continue to be an exemplary gathering place to discuss tall buildings, an essential building type today and even more for the future. While the forum is typically held in these three countries, the participants are not limited to those from these countries but global, including the academicians and professionals from the USA and Australia this year for example. If you are interested in joining the forum, please do not hesitate to contact me and/or other leaders of the journal.
With the rapid growth of population and urbanization throughout the globe, tall buildings are an inevitable building type. The International Journal of High-Rise Buildings promotes research and application of innovative technology and design to create more livable and sustainable vertical built environments with well thought-out tall building developments. Papers making a seminal contribution to this important effort are always welcome.
