This volume is an IJHRB special issue of "Construction Automation and Robotics". The six presented papers deliver innovative ideas and challenging development conforming to the Construction 4.0 era and smart construction. Dr. Thomas Bock and Rongbo Hu of Technical University of Munich, Germany analyzed technological readiness and innovations up to the present in the field of construction automation and robotics. He proposed a visionary archetype of a future vertical city which is easy to expand and transform vertically and horizontally. Mr. Makoto Kayashima and Yuusuke Noguchi of TAISEI Design Planners Architects & Engineers, Japan suggested BIM and mechanized constructions through the integration of digital technology and robot construction. Mr. Kun Zhang and his associates of China Construction Third Engineering Bureau Group Co., China developed a self-lifting and slewing multi-crane platform in order to optimize configuration of tower crane and enhance cooperative operation between multiple crane and other construction equipment. Dr. Kevin Han and his associates of North Carolina State University, USA developed an automated robotic welding system composed of welding machine, unmanned ground vehicle, robotic arm, and visual sensors as an alternative to labor shortage. Dr. Soonwook Kwon of SungKyunKwan University and his associates, Korea developed a real-time lifting performance monitoring system to collect lifting records and monitor lifting operation and performance information. Mr. Kun Zhang and his associates of China Construction Third Engineering Bureau Group Co., China proposed a new construction elevator with single-guide rail and multi-cages. The elevator is composed of rotating guide rail mechanism, vertical bearing mast tie system, segmented electrical power supply system, group control scheduling system, and safety anti-collision system.
