Title Editor's Note
Contents The third issue of the International Journal of High-Rise Buildings (IJHRB) focuses on the structural
behavior and design philosophy of tall buildings.

Earthquake is one of the most disastrous effects on the structural safety of tall buildings. Many countries are severely affected by earthquakes, such as Japan, China, Indonesia and Chile. For mitigating the seismic damages on the structure of tall buildings in most reliable and economical rule, more and more countries have developed and adopted performance-based design provisions for structural earthquake-resistance of tall buildings. This issue presents the current state of practice for performance-based seismic design in USA, Japan, China, Chile, South Korea, Philippines and Indonesia.

Shanghai Tower is a super high-rise building of 632 m in height. For identifying the structural behavior and reliability of the building subjected to earthquakes, a 1/40 scaled model of the building was tested on the shaking table. The main results of the tests are presented in this issue.

The progressive collapse of World Trade Centre Twin Towers in the 9.11 event led great attention over the world on the robustness of tall buildings against the progressive collapse. The outrigger is an effective system to increase the robustness of tall buildings. In addition, the outrigger system is also effective for strengthening the capacity of tall buildings to resist wind and earthquakes. The topics relevant to the progressive collapse and outrigger system of tall buildings are presented in this issue, too.

As the skeleton of tall buildings, the structure is the most important part for safety. I wish the professionals in structural engineering to provide your expertise to IJHRB to share knowledge with others and to raise the safety of community.

Sincerely,
Professor Guo-Qiang Li
