"Outrigger systems have come into widespread use in supertall buildings constructed since the 1980s .... Their popularity derives largely from the unique combination of architectural flexibility and structural efficiency." – "Outrigger Design for High-Rise Buildings: An output of the CTBUH Outrigger Working Group," 2012.
The March edition of IJHRB focuses on recent developments of the outrigger system and examples of current applications in high-rise buildings since the CTBUH outrigger design guide was first published in 2012. Featured in this issue is a paper by one of the co-authors of the Outrigger Working Group document, Dr. Goman Ho, titled "The evolution of outrigger system focuses on the Outrigger Designs." Four authors, Dr. Aly Mousaad Aly, Dr. Norihide Koshika, Mr. Rob Smith, and another Outrigger Working Group co-author, Mr. Neville Mathias, wrote papers about outrigger damping applications. A paper by Dr. Kyoung Sun Moon provides examples of outrigger applications in complex-shaped tall buildings. Lastly, Leonard Joseph, another of the Outrigger Working Group co-authors, wrote about the application of outriggers at the 335-meter-tall Wilshire Grand Center tower in downtown Los Angeles, a well-known seismic area. In this paper you can learn how buckling-restrained braces (BRBs) at each level are sized, analyzed and detailed to address wind and cyclic nonlinear seismic loads.
I would like to thank all of the paper contributors listed above for sharing their knowledge as well as the lessons learned from their projects. I would also like to extend my thanks to Prof. Sang Dae Kim and the staff of the IJHRB for providing a special issue dedicated to the topic of outriggers.
