This issue of IJHRB is organized as a special one on the design of foundation systems for high-rise buildings. The subjects of this special issue include foundation related practical problems, performance of foundation systems (raft, piled-raft and piles), and case histories etc. I believe this is the first IJHRB issue addressing the foundation design from the view point of geotechnical engineering. Total seven papers from Korea, Japan, Hong Kong, Australia were invited to address the topics related to geotechnical and foundation engineering of high-rise buildings. They are dealing with wide range of foundation design issues such as design process and geotechnical parameter assessment, numerical analysis, case studies from Korea, Japan, Hong Kong, Dubai and Saudi Arabia. One paper introduces the ASHRAE design guide. The contribution of the authors to this issue is highly appreciated. I believe it would bring more attentions to the importance of geotechnical aspects to the design of foundation systems of high-rise buildings.
