In the face of unprecedented global population growth, urbanization, pollution increase and climate change, it is no longer enough to simply create buildings that minimize their environment footprint. We need to be thought of, and building planned for, in all three dimensions – they cannot just be vehicles for isolated programs and expressed as products of two-dimensional zoning plans and height limits.* From the architecture and urban planning perspective, how to develop our cities beyond a collection of disparate icons, towards a vision of a connected, maximized, sustainable Vertical urbanism is mainly concerned by CTBUH in the future. In this volume, we collect 8 papers as several possible responses to this question. In the beginning, Dr. Antony Wood, the Executive Director of CTBUH puts forward ten principles for a new high-rise vernacular in his long paper. This could be regarded as a new slogan of tall building from CTBUH. After that, Mr. Schwettmann from SOM shares his thought on the relationship of sustainable buildings and cites; Mr. Drew and his colleagues from AS+GG share their recent comparative study on the environmental impact of tall building and small building; Prof. Lau and his students at HKU show their systematic research on the genesis of a vertical city in Hong Kong from the urban perspective. From the architectural field, Prof. Li and his students bring us their latest research on the typological evolution of high-rise buildings through thermodynamics and energy formation field; Mr. Klemperer, the design principle at KPF shares several new projects leading by him from China to New York and the concept of porous high-rise which could integrate the tall building into the city; Finally, Dr. Tan and me from Tongji University introduce our researches on the imageability and accessibility of vertical malls in Hong Kong and the vertical space system of mixed-use complex in Shanghai respectively. In the end, I'd like to appreciate the Chief Editors of IJHRB especially Prof. Sang Dae Kim and Prof. Guoqiang Li as well as CTBUH gave us a chance to co-edit a volume of IJHRB on behalf of CAUP, Tongji University. We hope our efforts could infuse new blood into IJHRB.
