Archipelago 21 is a 665 m supertall skyscraper approved to be built in the new Yongsan International Business District, Seoul, South Korea. When completed in 2016, it will surpass the neighboring 640 m supertall Digital Media City Landmark Building, currently under construction in Seoul, as the second-tallest building in the world after Burj Khalifa...

• Characteristic A

The Yongsan International Business District(YIBD) is a project for the development of an international center including business, commercial and residential zones centered around a landmark tower of 665m in height on a site of 566,800m2, located adjacent to the railway stations by the commercial district of Yongsan station and the district of Ichon-dong in the west. An international competition was held back in July 2008 where five globally-acclaimed architecture firms participated. The proposal entitled 'Archipelago 21' presented by Daniel Libeskind was finally selected as the master plan in march 2009

• Characteristic B

'Archipelago 21' exhibits a skyline with references to a flamboyantly exquisite golden crown from th Shilla Dynasty era, with nearly 30 buildings ranging in height from 20 to 70-stories and centered on the landmark tower which expresses th harmonious surroundings based on the concept of yin and yang. The master plan conceived from the scenery of Dadohae will be segmented into 'islet' of five facilities including business, commerce, residence, culture and leisure. These islets are independent yet combined perfectly into one big 'sea' with the surrounding³ª, bringing about breath-taking scenery

• Characteristic C

The plots for Yongsan IBD integrate the landmark tower within the overall urban structure of its master plan, such that it is reborn on the center of the land in a symbolic sense. The landma°¡ tower forms an ideal skyline with the other buildings contained on the master plan, and another dynamic form that responds actively with the surroundings beyond the Yongsan site. The ground level plans have adopted the form of footprints desihned in a way to create harmony with the overall landscapes and th master plan.
